Breath lingereth after flesh hath failed, tears are rendered unto salt, and every voice sinketh into the earth until silence itself becometh a sacred office. Far below the ken of living men, the sepulchres remain unwakened, the black soil drinketh both remembrance and desire, and the sable deeps receive all things without mercy or lament. There, corruption is no curse but consecration, and the shadow beneath the world endureth as an elder covenant, older than stone and untouched by the passing of ages.
